In order for our film to be clear and pleasant to the viewer, we must have good quality footage. This means that image quality, lighting and colours should reflect reality well. That is why it is very important to choose the right equipment. On vacations it will usually be a mobile phone or a camera. Currently available mobiles and cameras have decent parameters and functions, so if we have new generation equipment, we can make use of it. However, it is also worth investing in additional equipment stabilizing the image, i.e. gimbal and tripod. They will keep the camera steady while handheld shooting, which is the most often situation on holidays. It is also good to have several options for taking different shots, so extra lenses would be useful. This, however, depends on the size of our luggage. In open-air locations, the drone will also work well if we can handle it and it won’t drown at the first attempt.

While still on holiday, it’s worth taking care of the diversity of the footage for the film. We all know that in the vacation video relaxation, fun and sightseeing are supposed to be in the first place, but it is good to remember to shoot in different places, different situations, not only on the beach, during sightseeing or by the pool, but also on the way to the main attractions. Record some flora and fauna. Take basic close ups and scenery shots or shots from some unusual angles. Sometimes it’s good to focus on some details. Thanks to that our film will be interesting and dynamic.

When preparing for film editing, it’s a good idea to review the footage and rethink the script of our film. It is best if the film has a story, a common thread, something that will form a plot from the beginning to the end. Of course, during holidays, the natural sequence is the chronological scheme, i.e. we come, visit, leave. We can also simply take snapshots from the trip if we do not want to build any story or we do not have the right footage. However, it is good to add some more flavour, such as shots characteristic for the place of stay, local attractions, typical food, local culture, etc. An important element helping to build the mood is music, e.g. local music or music of a character that suits our trip. So choose your background music accordingly to create an integrated visual and auditory experience to get people involved in your story.

When editing your video clip, don’t be tempted by all the special effects available in the video editing tool. Yes, they all look great and you would love to show the audience your skills and advanced techniques by using various effects. However, after applying too many effects, it may it may turn out to be glitzy… Remember that professional films usually do not contain fancy transitions and image effects. If you want to use transitions, let’s opt for one type. The less attention it attracts, the better. If you have good footage, how you edit it is more important than special effects. You should decide whether the shots will be short and dynamic, or long and calm. You can add slow motion on portrait or scenery views. You might want to get your footages some colour tuning. Just remember one thing: quality is more important than quantity.

Another aspect that is very important when shooting and publishing a video from vacation is the legal aspect. In your film you would probably like to show people’s images as it increases the attractiveness of the video. Some holiday scenes simply cannot be shooted without recording other people, e.g. on a crowded beach or during a sightseeing tour in the city. In most of the countries recording someone’s image in public places does not require special consents but not everywhere (as in Greece) so It is highly recommended to check the local legislation on recording in public places and publishing someone’s image before going on vacation. It should be also remembered that generally speaking, the dissemination of one’s image requires the consent of that person especially when we will make a commercial use of the image. It is always good to be gentle in filming strangers in order not to violate their right to privacy..
